Standard therapies and medications aren’t always effective in treating mental disorders. Dedicated to providing comprehensive, holistic care, Nina Greif, DO, DABPN, at LiveWell TMS offers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a treatment for a major depressive disorder, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), that doesn’t respond to traditional therapies. To get the help you need, contact the office in Huntington, New York, by phone, or you can request an appointment online today.
TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in your brain to improve symptoms of depression. LiveWell TMS offers TMS therapy for major depressive disorder and uses a MagVenture machine for treatment.
Dr. Greif determines if you’re a good candidate for TMS during your consultation, in which she identities the biological, psychological, and social factors that may contribute to your mental health symptoms.
She may recommend TMS if you suffer from depression, and other treatments have failed to relieve your symptoms.
During your TMS session, Dr. Greif places an electromagnetic coil against your scalp near your forehead. She then activates the advanced therapy system, and the electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates your nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression.
Though researchers are still investigating how TMS works, it’s theorized that the stimulation affects the part of your brain that’s not working, which in turn seems to ease depression symptoms and improve mood.
During your initial TMS therapy treatment, Dr. Greif needs to identify the best location to place the magnets on your head and the most effective dose of magnetic energy.
During this initial session, which usually takes about an hour, you sit in a reclining chair so you are comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Greif then places the magnetic coil on your head and turns the energy off and on to produce stimulating pulses. You may feel a tapping sensation or hear a clicking sound during this process.
To get the best results from your TMS treatment, Dr. Greif recommends a treatment course consisting of 30 daily Monday through Friday treatments for six weeks, followed by a two-week taper of 2-3 sessions. The follow-up TMS sessions only take about 20 minutes, and you can resume your usual activities after treatment.
Dr. Greif will check in with you periodically to assess your treatment response and to discuss any concerns that you may have. She will also suggest two follow-up appointments after the end of treatment to address any ongoing concerns.
Your symptoms may begin to improve a few weeks after you start treatments. Though results vary, you may experience a complete resolution of your depression symptoms after your TMS therapy.
